Isi artikelIn ELT materials, pragmalinguistic knowledge is often found in language functions, one of the materials covered in English course books. Language functions are basically the implementation of speech acts, a very important aspect in pragmatics. Making invitations, expressing likes and dislikes, or expressing happiness is several examples of language functions in ELT materials. Each language function consists of language expressions. This paper aims at investigating the language expressions from pragmalinguistic perspectives. A pragmatic judgment task and pragmalinguistic theories were employed to examine the language expressions in a local English coursebook for Indonesian secondary school students. Results show that the coursebook did not contain adequate pragmalinguistic knowledge which implies that pragmalinguistic failure may have occured in the local English coursebook. Consequently, pragmalinguistic knowledge should be incorporated in English coursebooks so that English learners can avoid pragmalinguistic failure and misunderstanding in actual communications.
