Isi artikel
The presence of deaf student in English Department Faculty of Humanities Universitas Indonesia entails an adaptation process in order to support the learning process for the student. Since there is only one deaf student in regular class, one of the adaptabilities effort offer by the Department is having sign language interpreter(s) for the deaf. This paper is a case study research towards sign language interpreting process in English teaching process. In the teaching and learning process, the sign language interpreter(s) have significant role in transferring the course materials from the lecturer. In other words, the interpreter(s) become one of the important factors for the student’s achievement in acquiring the target language. In the teaching process, there are several challenges faced by the interpreter(s) in delivering the teaching content, such as, speech tempo, the usage of determiners (this, that), the usage of media, classroom preparation, and language differences (English and BISINDO—the natural sign language used by the Deaf community in Indonesia). The aim of this paper is to provide a clear picture about several things involves 1) sign language interpreting process in English teaching classroom, 2) the coordination of interpreter(s) and lecturer(s), both in classroom preparation as well as teaching process, and 3) challenges experienced by the interpreter(s). For the data elicitation process, we use questionnaire and do in-depth interviews in order to elicit as well as acknowledge the data related to the classroom preparation and teaching process. We process the data in order to gain the general sense based on the information given by the participants. Then, we make categorization based on the data followed by in-depth analysis. Through this process, it is possible to see the correlation between each category, thus we could drag a conclusion based on that. The conclusion brought by this research might offer suggestions in sign language interpreting process in English teaching classroom.
