Isi artikelMongondowic is a language spoken by Bolaang Mongondow tribe in North Celebes, Indonesia. In reality, the number of Mongondowic speaker is more than other Gorontalo-Mongondow family languages, but in fact Mongondowic language status is near to the endangered status. According to Ethnologue (2000), this language is only spoken by 230.000 speakers. Furthermore, Mongondowic is in scale 7 on EGIDS. By this data, it shows that Mongondowic is only spoken by the childbearing circle without any revitalization process in the outer circle. Less of documentations appear as one of concerning issue through its language status. On the other side, as an Austronesian language, actually Mongondowic also has a unique word formation system. For instance in nominalizations, this language apparently show agglutinative patterns by adding and combining morphemes jointly. In this case, all derivative nouns have its own marker based on its meaning. The marker can be affixes or the word formation process. For example, prefix {momo-} and its allomorphs indicate the agentive meaning; prefix {pomo-} and its allomorphs indicate the instrumentals meaning; and prefix {poyo-} indicate the manners meaning. According to Comrie & Thompson (in Shopen, 2007:334), nominalization is a changing process from other word classes into noun. Therefore, this paper focused on describing Mongondowic instrumental nouns based on the theory of word formation process in general. Essentially, there are some previous studies which discussed about nominalization through languages (Bauer, 1988; Quirk et.al, 1976; Usup, 1981; Ibawardani, 1990; Sunoto et.al, 1990; Ma’nawi, 1996; Denistia, 2012; Alwi et.al, 2014; Pratikno, 2014), but there is not any study focused in the same issue. As a qualitative-descriptive study, the source of data was taken from previous study (Usup, 1978), Mongondowic dictionary, and natives knowledge. Then finally, this study found that Mongondowic instrumental nouns can be formed by affixations, reduplications, and compounds. Furthermore, every process also has different lexical markers. By this result, the study of Mongondowic morphological process will bring a continental study through its semantic and syntactic area.
