Isi artikelStudents, nowadays, are demanded to use English communicatively. However, it is still problematic for English language learners to be able to speak English. There might be a lot of reasons affecting the low level of speaking ability of the students. As Fry at al. (2003) offer some aspects that we as teachers teaching at higher education have to take them into account, they are, students? learning styles, teaching approach/method, students? motivation, cultural background, prior knowledge, learning climate/environment, and the reduce of didactic teaching. Those aspects or some might be the sources of the phenomena above. or some might be the sources of the phenomena above. However, the researchers agreed to what Freire (2007) says that “the „banking? concept of education tends to be adopted by teachers, where the teachers? role is to deposit information into the minds of their students and they do not deem it important for students to discover knowledge on their own or think critically about what has been read”. In other words, lecture method still gets more portions in teaching. It is totally in contrast with the language teaching principal stated by Eskey (in Rhoades 2013:29); he says “experience tells us repeatedly that we learn language by using it. Simply telling our students about the language and then sending them out to practice it on their own is not the most effective way for them to retain knowledge”. For this learning problem, the use of songs to assist students to practice speaking English becomes important. Using songs to teach English to music department students will avoid boring class since listening to songs and singing are enjoyable ways to learn new words sentences and language. This study was carried out to find the effectiveness and steps of teaching speaking to music department students using songs. The instruments of the study were observation, questionnaire and speaking test. The techniques used in gathering data go in line with the research instruments. Firstly, observation. It was done done by the researchers to observe students? participation and activities in learning process by making notes. Besides the writer asked the subjects to fulfill a questionnaire to get their responds after being taugh using songs and the last they did a speaking test. Furthermore, the data got from observation sheet and questionnaire were descriptively analyzed, whilst the speaking test were analyzed based on the standard of measurement proposed by Hughes (1989). It can be concluded that the use of songs to teach speaking to music department students was effective shown by the result of observation, questionnaire and speaking test. In order to help students in improving their speaking ability using songs, the researchers offered some teaching steps, they are 1) group formation, 2) discussion, 3) presentation, 4) question and answer, 5) singing the song. The strengths of the technique were 1) enjoyable, 2) can increase students? participation, 3) increase students? confidence, 4) provided time for students to practice speaking meanwhile the weaknesses of the technique were 1) more difficult for big class, 2) time consuming.
