Isi artikelThis paper entitled Participial Phrase Used in S1 Research Reports is a research report I plan to do and to present in this seminar. This study is done due to the fact that this participial phrase is the reduced form of the relative clause which, I think, is easier and more commonly used in daily English. The problem is that using participial phrase instead of using relative clause is not always easy and even sometimes participial phrase is used incorrectly as a result of the incomplete mastery of relative clause and its reduced form, participial phrase. The objectives of this study are to see whether participial phrase is used in research reports written by English department graduates of Atma Jaya Catholic University Jakarta. In more detailed analysis of the objectives which types of participial phrases are used and how frequent are they used and which type of participial phrase is used more frequently than the other. The data are limited to any ten research reports of our graduates. This research would be significant for students who are learning the participial phrase and the teacher teaching such topics. This research is conducted, firstly, by selecting randomly ten research reports of the English department graduates; secondly, reading through one by one reports of the methodology and the findings and discussion sections; thirdly, identifying the participial phrase used in each research reports; fourth, copying each sentence containing participial phrase then placing it in a summary table for each research report and underlining the participial phrase; finally, categorizing each participial phrase according to its type, present participle (-ing form) and past participle (-ed form), and the possible errors of the participial phrase used in the reports in a summary table to see the frequency of each type of participial phrase and the possible errors used. This research is a case study limited to any ten research reports of English department graduates of Atma Jaya Catholic University. This study would be significant to learners and teachers of English.
