“How would you meme this”: playful identity constuction on instagram meme commentaries

This paper observes playful identity construction performed by instagram users in the commentary session of the meme in @9GAG Instagram account. By applying CMDA (Computer Mediated Discourse Analysis), the linguistic resources used by the instagram users in the commentaries session is considered as social phenomena where the users construct and negotiate their playful idenitity to be validated by other users indicated through the reaction (likes and replies). The data were collected randomly from November 2018 to February 2019 and analyzed qualitatively. The @9GAG Instagram account is chosen as the source of the data for its popularity of humorous internet meme and frequency of post. The analysis reveals that there are 5 linguistics strategies applied by the users to construct their playful identity; recaptioning, wordplay, sarcasm, hyperbole, and chronological collaborative story telling. The analysis also reveals that the playful identity constructed by the users are set by the content of the meme. Different content and different linguistic structure applied in a meme affects the humours statement produced by the users as the reply of the meme.
