Conceptualization involving embodiment seems to be phenomenal and plausibly universal, as it is found in most languages of the world. For example, in English, „mouth? can be used to replace „estuary? in the following expression, mouth of the river, and many languages share the same body part to describe „estuary?; such as l'embouchure de la rivière in French, monding van de rivier in Dutch, and mulut sungai in Indonesian among others. In some other languages, this expression has gone deep through grammaticalization, such as ????? in Belarus and desembocadura in Portuguese. According to Kraska-Szlenk (2014), the embodiment hypothesis consists of at least three domains, i.e. “cognition and conceptualization, usage criteria and culture” (p.18). Only the human body parts that are saliently perceived to conceptualize other abstract concepts and/or objects and transmitted across generation within a community and as a part of shared culture are considered to be embodied. Speakers of languages worldwide choose to conceptualize using selected human body parts, and these selections are based on shared cognitive notions on similar shapes and/or functions when being mapped onto targeted objects (see Kraska-Szlenk, 2014). Some of these concepts are shared universally across languages. This paper will discuss some body terms, mainly in Indonesian, and make brief comparisons with other languages relating to embodiment hypothesis, functionalization, and cultural model. The latter is correlated with cultural saliency by discussing HATI „liver? in Indonesian. Source-target pairing in cognitive conceptualization mapping is used to analyse and interpreted selected linguistic data. Finally, through existing linguistic evidence, this paper proposes that cultural-salient lexemes would enrich its linguistic repository and indicate cultural model(s) in a given culture.
