Isi artikelWith the rapid growth of globalization, communication and interactions between people with different cultures and ethnic groups have been extremely increased, especially in Indonesia where people usually live side by side with others with different background, ethnic groups, values, cultures, and languages. Migration opens many opportunities for them to learn from each other’s cultural values. It might also put people into situations where languages other than their native tongues are dominant. However, not many people notice that preserving own language and culture is an important thing to do to be passed on to the next generations. This qualitative study aims to reveal how Teachers College students’ attitudes towards their heritage languages and what factors that influence their decisions to preserve their heritage languages. Language attitude is related to the perception of the speakers of different language varieties (Agheyisi & Fishman, 1970). It involves their cognition, affection, and readiness to do action according to a certain situation (Baker, 1992). It may also affect the way they perceive the world and guide their social relationships (Cargile et al., 1994). From the questionnaire and interview results gathered, it was found out that the students agreed that they would welcome and accept cultures & languages from other countries as part of their learning process and widen their horizons, but they also realized that they needed to preserve & preserve their heritage languages & cultures. By having a positive attitude towards their heritage language actually has brought a positive impact towards how they see their own language and culture. Moreover, when parents have a positive toward their heritage language, this will help determine the language that will be used by the children. The more parents’ value and use the heritage language, the more their children tend to acquire and preserve it (Gharibi & Boers, 2017)). There were also other factors that influence the heritage-language varieties and change such as family policy and institutional or educational policy that were found as the crucial predictors towards the maintenance of heritage-languages.
