Isi artikelFood is something important in Lubuklinggau society because they already have ‘a serving food’ culture (ngeedung) to others just to strengthen the relationship among the members. By the rise of culinary activities in Lubuklinggau, food culture has been influenced by some cultures such as local and western menus. In this case, food has become a familiar and very interesting topic to talk. Food finally is also used by men and women to communicate and identify themselves each other and to others. Unfortunately, Ngeedung culture is losing its popularity among the youth particularly. This life style change is probably influenced by the use of social media and the popularity of culinary activities. Some researches proved the differences between men and women associated with food, media and advertisements which present the distinction on food preference, physical activities, and dietary identities. It indicates that food may present the portrait of certain cultural and language phenomena anywhere and any places. Therefore, this study aims at giving the description on how men and women identify themselves among language speakers in Lubuklinggau society in talking about food. The informants as the data source were selected through ‘social network’ consisting 10 women and 4 men. Participation observation and recording technique were used to collect the data. Ethnographic interview and noting technique were carried out as the secondary techniques in the research. In analyzing the data, inductive approach was used through the application of intra-lingual comparative technique in comparing to the language features. The findings show that between men and women there are some distinctions in showing their identity when they were talking about food. They showed their identity distinctively through what they described in different speech events. Women tend 1) to describe and promote the family tradition and their role in it, 2) to express different level of like and dislike toward food, and 3) to state superiority by describing food taste, such as sweet and hot-spicy. Men did not talk too many things instead of describing a habit of consuming food including identify their simplicity and food quantity which was marked by the cheap and simple menu (bakwan, fried rice) and the use of ‘quantifier’ banyak (big portion).
