Isi artikelTeaching young learners is not easy, challenging, and needs a lot of patience. In order to maintain the classroom atmosphere, teachers positive emotions are necessary. However, teacher negative emotions that appear would influence student behavior in the classroom. Young learners love to learn, they are eager to experience new things, including what they learn at school, which makes the teacher’s job exciting and rewarding. Nevertheless, young learners tend to have poor discipline, have less awareness and short attention spans. Many teachers feel depressed after teaching young learners since it is demanding to teach and control the learner's behavior at the same time. One problem highlighted is regarding the negative emotions that some teachers often show in the classroom, such as threatening, cursing (verbal abuse), hitting (non-verbal abuse) or even ignoring the students. According to Morris, 2013 (as cited by Ruiz 2016), student behavior is also a factor influenced by teachers emotions. The purpose of this present study is to investigate the influence of teacher negative emotions in the process of teaching and learning English in the classroom, and the kinds of student misbehaviors. Data were collected from two elementary English school teachers, and two kindergarten English school teachers, ranged in 8-25 years teaching experience. Eight elementary school and kindergarten students, learning English as a foreign language from a private school in Central Jakarta. The data for this study were taken from observation and interview. Result indicates that the relationship between teachers and students in the classroom was not good, the teacher cannot control their emotions in the classroom, inversely to their relationship outside the classroom. One of the reasons the teachers showed their negative emotions was because the misbehaved student disturbed the process of teaching and learning. Young learners get bored easily when the teachers use the same method all the time in teaching. Therefore, young learner teachers need to be creative so that they could minimize the students misbehaviors in the classroom.
