Isi artikelThe argument quality in the discussion section of a research article (RA) determines the quality of the article as a whole and therefore this section must be written as convincing as possible in order to make readers accept the research findings or new knowledge claims. However, authors in different disciplines and/or languages such as Indonesian RA authors in Languages and Literature Studies may address this section in different rhetorical style. This study is aimed at investigating how Indonesian authors in Language and Literature Studies argue for the importance of their claims and use references in the discussion section of their Indonesian RAs. For this study, 40 RAs were chosen from four different Indonesian research journals in Language and Literature Studies (i.e., 10 from ‘Salingka’, 10 from ‘Makara’, 10 from ‘Linguistik Indonesia’ and 10 from ‘Linguistika’). The articles were taken from the recent version of the journals in order to ensure the most recent features of the article published in the journals. Following Swales (2004), Parkinson (2011) and Liu and Buckingham (2018), the analyses were conducted on a) how Indonesian authors rhetorically convince journal readers and the research community at large on their new knowledge claim after presenting the research results or findings, b) how Indonesian authors use references or citations of the work of others in their RA discussions and c) how effective is the author’s argument in their RA discussion. The results show that none of the strategies and techniques used by the Indonesian authors in Language and Literature studies in justifying the importance of their research findings in their RA discussion is categorized obligatory; the majority of them are conventional and some of them are optional. In addition, the majority of Indonesian readers found that the Indonesian authors’ argument in supporting their new knowledge claim is convincing and less convincing. This implies that even to the Indonesian readers the Indonesian authors’ argument in their RA discussion is not very convincing and this may be because they use incomplete strategies and techniques with few references in justifying their research findings in their RA discussions.
