Isi artikelThis survey aims to find out whether or not teaching English in Indonesia has to employ British Accent (BA) not with foreign accent (FA), such as Indonesian accent. The background of the study came up when some comments on Tutorial YouTube about English pronunciation, presented by an Indonesian tutor, say that teaching English pronunciation must practice BA. Some viewers do not accept Indonesian accent even there’s nothing wrong with tutor’s pronunciation. It means tutor pronunciation is correct. Because there’s no theory that teaching English in Indonesia must use BA, so, this survey collects some opinions from 100 respondents consisting of English teachers, English lecturers, two superintendents of English teacher in Dikbud, students of universities, and native speakers of English. They had to tick one of four options of each statement in Likert scale questionnaire. Those options are strongly agree, agree, disagree, and strongly disagree. Two statements deals with whether or not they agree if English teachers in Indonesia must practice BA. One statement is about whether or not they agree that accent is different from pronunciation and one statement is whether or not they agree if teaching English must use correct pronunciation with or without FA. The finding of the survey shows that 92% respondents agree that teaching English with FA, in particular Indonesian accent, is not a problem. 74 % of respondents agree that pronunciation is different from accent. 62% agree that teaching English must include correct pronunciation either with FA or BA. According to Likert scale standard, the percentage between 60% - 79.99% and 80% - 100% show the agreement. Thus, the survey concludes that FA in teaching English to EFL learners in Indonesia is very tolerable on condition that correct pronunciation is an absolute requirement.
