Isi artikelThis research explores how the pattern of phatic utterance and the politeness principle are applied in conversation opening phase by Javanese women in the realm of the workplace. The data for this study are the speeches made by Javanese women in the workplace, obtained from Javanese women of working age, aged 23-50 years who worked in the area of Surakarta, Central Java. Data is obtained through observation and recording methods, followed by the process of transcription. Furthermore, identification of the forms of the phatic speech is obtained by referring to the speech act theory from Kreidler (1998), and the politeness aspect of phatic communication is explored based on politeness principles by Brown and Levinson (1987). The analysis showed that the forms of phatic utterance by Javanese women at the opening phase of conversation in the workplace are in the form of 1) Phatic utterances expressing greeting 2) Phatic utterances expressing invitation 3) Phatic utterances expressing comments which include comments on physical appearance, feeling, dressing, and possession 4) Phatic utterances expressing congratulations 5) Phatic utterances expressing condolences. In addition, The Javanese women also apply the politeness principle of Bald on record, positive politeness and negative politeness. The utilization of various forms of phatic utterances together with the politeness principles seems to be the communication skill that enables Javanese women to put oil on the wheel of social interaction in the workplace. The understanding of this can be a starting point for conducting similar studies applied to women with different social and cultural backgrounds.
