Noun Phrase is a syntactic structure consisting of a noun as a core or head and other elements as its complements. Syntactically it can function as a Subject, an Object, and a Complement in a sentence. This paper attempts to analyze the structure and describe the syntactic functions of the Balinese Noun Phrases (NPs) by applying Minimalist program. Balinese is a regional language in Indonesia. It is grouped into Western Malayo-Polynesian family, a sub-group of Austronesian languages (Artawa, 2004:2). Balinese has two varians, that is high level Balinese and low level Balinese however the difference between the two levels are mostly lexically implied. Minimalist program considers phrases as constituents joined from the bottom up gradually by combining the last two words into greater constituents that combine again with another word in the phrase, to build larger constituencies, up to the maximum combination. This merging process occurs gradually and binary, and each merge has a core that determines its complement until the final stage, the constituents resulting from the merging process combine with the specifier, that is the last constituent, and project maximally to form the largest structure. This research applies decriptive-qualitative approach, by combining analitic and introspective methods. The data source of this research is short story texts randomly taken from Sastra slot in “Bali Orti”, weekly newspaper of Bali Post. The data were descriptively and analitically analysed by using the deductive-inductive-deductive approach. The study determines Balinese as a head-initial language since nearly all the elements within the Balinese NP are post-heads. The result shows that there are simple, complex and conjoined NP structures in Balinese. Secondly, a single noun can be a full NP and can be projected maximally in Balinese. All the structures are adequately accounted by Minimalist convention. Finally, Balinese NPs function as specifiers, complements, and adjuncts in sentences.
