Isi artikelRecent linguistic maps of Sumatra (Lewis, Simons & Fennig 2013) include Kaur, a Malayic lect in Bengkulu. Implicit in these maps is the claim that the 'languages' mapped therein are mutually unintelligible with their linguistic neighbors. Is this true in the case of Kaur? This paper examines the origin of the Kaur/Mulak ISO language entry, Kaur's fit within the southern Sumatran Malay dialect network, and indications of its intelligibility with neighboring lects, with the goal to determine whether a request to merge Kaur with the South Barisan Malay language entry is warranted. Data are analyzed with the comparative method, tracing innovations in Kaur and other lects from Proto-Malayic (Adelaar 1992). Tools of dialectometry such as lexicostatistics and phonostatistics (Kessler 1995) provide quantitative measures of relative linguistic distance and estimated intelligibility (Beijering, Gooskens & Heeringa 2008), and sociolinguistic questionnaires and recorded text tests bring in a more social dimension. Results are interpreted incorporating theoretical insights from social constructionism (Burr 2003).
