Isi artikel
Nowadays, there have been many new words in both English and Indonesian. The words often make the speaker confused to choose their correct form, and about how they are constructed. This topic, indeed, has been discussed in several works, but this paper is very important because no one has ever discussed the both languages simultaneously. Besides, this paper utilized the latest data. The first two words represent English words, whereas the second ones represent Indonesian words. The word, „available?, for example, is said to be true as it is a natural word. However, the word „evailable? is also true in the sense of to be available online via an electronic method such as email, econnote, etc. Evailable is a newly word constructed through blending process, i.e., combining the initial part of the first word, „electronic? with the final parts of the second word, „available?. Next, the newly Indonesian word, „patas? is the correct form which is, a blending process word, combining the final part of the first word, „cepat? “fast”? with the final part of the second word, „terbatas? “limited”. Not „pattas? is the form chosen for the blending word because of comfort and ease pronunciation. These examples are only the samples of what will be discussed in this paper. To get the data of this study, the observation method was used together with documentation techniques. The source of data were in the form of texts taken from printed material, or audio visual media. Data were analyzed using descriptive –qualitative approach. Finally, this study reveals that the kinds of word formation in both English and Indonesian can go through the following mechanisms: blending, clipping, back formation, abbreviation, and acronym. Whereas the factors that are considered in the process of constructing new shortened words are comfort, ease of pronunciation, and simplification.
