In Indonesia, the center of attention in English teaching has been the rules of the language. However, the writer found that even the rules of the Present Tense appear to be confusing for the majority of English learners. The writer notices that grammaticality is very important for inaccuracy will lead to misinterpretation. For that reason, this research is aimed to discover whether the inaccuracy in the present tense belong to errors or mistake. Corder (1981) made a distinction between errors of performance and errors of competence. He further introduced the terms of ‘error’ and ‘mistake’ differently; an ‘error' as a systematic and consistent deviation from inaccuracy as a result of the learner’s linguistic system at a specified stage of learning, whereas a ‘mistake' as a deviation caused by a fault: the fault as a result of misjudgment, carelessness, or forgetfulness. In this study, 17 students of Tourism Academy in Bunda Mulia University were involved to talk about a tourist destination they wanted to visit for their next holiday in 3 minutes. In the students’ transcribed speech, there were 64 errors found in 5 major areas of principal ways in which learners reconstruct the surface structure of target language, namely: omission, addition, misformation, misplacement and misuse of verb BE and HAVE. The results showed that all the errors belonged to mistakes, for in every single student’s speech, the correct use of the rules of the present tense always occurred at least once, despite their frequent misapplications. However, they might only be on the level of knowing the rules, but not understanding them.
