Isi artikelName is the identity marker which has form and meaning and its form and meaning may differ in several areas. These differences not only limited in linguistics, but also as a form of representation of local culture. This research observed the form and meaning, especially the cultural meaning in Sangirese ethnic surnames in North Sulawesi. The surnames of Sangirese have somewhat unique forms, and have not been realized by the people of Sangirese ethnic. Previous researches often studied the cultural meaning, but there can be seen a scarcity, if not none, in the research of surnames. Therefore, this research aims to study the meaning behind the surnames, thus, this research is a descriptive-qualitative research. The collected data in this research are the surnames of Sangirese people in the village of Pusunge, Sangihe Regency, North Sulawesi Province. The data were collected through interview and elicitation. This method and technique was done in the fieldwork. Then, the data are classified morphologically based on the forms. After classification, the analysis was done through the anthropolinguistic approach to explore deeper regarding the cultural meaning. From this research, it is found that Sangirese surnames consist of two forms, namely monomorphemic and polymorphemic. In polymorphemic, the Sangirese surnames can be separated into two morphemes and three morphemes. These morphemic combinations consist of bound morpheme with free morpheme or free morpheme with bound morpheme. As for the cultural meaning behind the surnames, through anthropolinguistic theory, there are three meanings which are (1) surnames with futurative meaning, which is the meaning of the name containing hopes and wishes; (2) surnames with situational meaning, which is the meaning of the name is in accordance with the situation in the name-giving process; and (3) surnames with the memorial meaning, which is the meaning of the name which is in accordance with the memory of the name-giver. These rich and multifarious form and meaning of the surnames showed that there are numerous sorts of cultural values which are lived by the Sangirese people. Also, this name-giving process is one of the means to internalize such cultural values.
