The production of /r/ sound in free speech English can be one of the elements used in describing the characteristics of English accents. In English speaking countries, the characteristics of each variation are distinguishable. On the other hand, it might be different from EFL country such as Indonesia. Due to this reason, the study aims to investigate the production of /r/ sound in Indonesia English and to find out whether there is an unusual phenomenon occurred in the production of /r/ sound. Indonesian English in this sense refers to the English variety spoke by Indonesian people. Thus, in order to answer the questions, qualitative method is employed. Qualitative method is used as way in understanding how /r/ sound is pronounced in Indonesian English. The data is the recordings of nine English Linguistics students consisted of six female students and three male students. The participants were chosen due to their English proficiency and their knowledge of English accents variation. In collecting the data, all of the participants were asked to read several English words that have been classified into several categories based of the position of /r/ sound. There are four groups of English words in total. Besides, they were also asked to read a paragraph which contains the words that have been read previously. The results of the study points out that Indonesian English is considered as rhotic. However, the researcher found out that there are several participants who omit the /r/ sound in non-final position when pronouncing the words, but it is different from the way they read the paragraph of the story. Regarding the results, the tendency of rhotic variation in Indonesian English may be influenced by the exposure of American popular culture and strengthened by the fact that Bahasa Indonesia is distinctively rhotic. Additionally, it is expected that the findings would give more insight to the study of EFL, especially Indonesian English.
