Lamaholot is a Central Malayo-Polynesian language of the Austronesian family, which is spoken in Flores Islands (see, e.g. Blust 1993). A number of descriptive works on different varieties of Lamaholot have been found, such as Nishiyama and Kelen (2007), Nagaya (2011), Grangé (2015), and Kroon (2016).Although a number of works have focused on various grammatical aspects of the language have been found, these studies have not paid much attention to the morpheme one= (lit. inside=possessor). One= is an alienable noun which usually attaches to an enclitic marking a possessor (e.g. one=k ‘my insides’). This noun is essential to Lamaholot people as the noun can be used to represent one’s self. For example, when one evaluates someone, the person would ask: nae ni one=N melaN le one=N medhon 3sg DET inside=3sg.poss good or inside=3sg.poss bad ‘Is his/her heart good or not?’ Interestingly, one= like type of noun is also observed in neighboring languages, such as in Tetun (a Timor language spoken in Belu of Eastern Indonesia and East Timor) (see Grimes 2018), Rotenese (a language spoken in Roti Island of Eastern Indonesia) (see Goddard, 2001) and in Indonesian (Siahaan 2008). This study aims to present the five different functions of one=, i.e. to form expressions which involve emotion (e.g. one=k geridiN ‘I am angry’), to form expression of thoughts (e.g. koda moe=N go hukut ia one=k ‘I keep your words in my heart’), to form expressions denoting the self-quality of a person (e.g. ne one=N kelemure ‘he/she is generous’), to form expressions denoting social unity (pai taaN one=ket tou ‘let’s unite our heart’), and to form expressions denoting one’s physical condition or health (e.g. go one=k de mela hala ‘I am not feeling well’). In addition, this study also compares the distribution of one= and its counterparts in Tetun, Rotenese, and Indonesian. Finally, this study attempts to show how one= helps us understand Lamaholot people’s view in their social life. This study focuses on the Adonara dialect of Lamaholot and the data are mainly taken from Toni (2018) and Boro Bebe (2012, 2014).
