Isi artikelThis paper aims to compare the syntactic structure units of 30 essays taken from the same class of English department students of Bina Sarana Informatika University (UBSI) during their first, second and third semester. Each semesters, the writer took ten essays with determined topics; the topic of the first semester was my dream job; the topic of the second semester was the story of my life and the topic of the third semester was the power of social media. Each essays consisted about 250-300 words. The data was analyzed by using Second Language Syntactic Complexity Analyzer (L2SCA) proposed by Lu (2010). This free online web-based program displays nine syntactic structural units (words, sentences, verb phrases, clauses, T-units, dependent clauses, complex T-units, coordinate phrases, and complex nominal). Beside nine syntactic structural units, L2SCA program also produces fourteen syntactic complexity measures. Since this is a brief paper, it does not discuss the fourteen syntactic complexity measures and focuses merely on the comparison of nine syntactic structure units. In general, the results show the increasing score from the first, second and third semester. It means that there is an improvement of students’ writing skill during the three first semester of studying English.
