Isi artikelThe world of satire has been utilized as one of the coping mechanisms by the human when dealing with various matters and it could be implemented in numerous forms, including movies and speeches. Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator (1940) shows concerns towards the European fascism preceding the World War II. The movie is a legendary satire work for ridiculing Hitler’s characteristics, however, the final speech stood out for its memorable and powerful use of language thus being successful in getting its message delivered. This research employs Fairclough’s three stages of Critical Discourse Analysis, namely description of text, interpretation of the relationship between text and interaction, and explanation of the relationship between interaction and social context (1989). The script of the speech is broken down into clauses for further analysis. In fulfilling the first step, the researcher employs transitivity analysis (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2004). Despite belonging to the expressive and operative function spectrum, this text carries the declarative sentence as the most present. Therefore, the declarative sentences would be the only ones being categorized and analyzed using transitivity analysis. Within the transitivity system there are material, mental, relational, behavioral, verbal, and existential processes in which the type of clauses will be categorized and later be utilized for the research data. The next two steps, interpretation and explanation, will result in the description of how the text connects with the social context and the circumstances surrounding the movie in which the speech took place, thus making this research utilizes a descriptive-qualitative method. In order to reveal the hidden ideology, there will be two supporting aspects utilized. The first aspect is the result of the transitivity analysis which includes the possible tendency as well as the interpretation of the type of certain processes of the clauses. The second aspect involves a further analysis and characterization of the text in terms of field, tenor, and mode. The act of characterizing the text is necessary due to its ability to give a better understanding upon what is going on, who is taking part, as well as what role is being played by language and other semiotic systems in the situation. Hypothetically, the character delivering the final speech from The Great Dictator shares the same position and gives support to the oppressed since he, Garbitsch, is an innocent man who was mistakenly captured due to his resemblance to the character of the dictator, Adenoid Hynkel. Finally, this paper aims at revealing and explaining the ideologies hidden and how it is constructed within Chaplin’s last speech from the movie The Great Dictator.
