Isi artikelGoogle Translate has been an inevitable tool for university students nowadays. Whenever they need to write college essays or articles in two languages, they often resort to Google Translate to perform the tasks. Thus, students often write in one language and then translate it into another language using Google Translate. This phenomenon can be perceived in their thesis writing, especially in the abstract section which should be written in English and in Indonesian. This research aims to compare Students’ and Google Translate’s translations regarding the lexical collocations found in the abstract section of the thesis. This is a qualitative study which analyzed the data in a descriptive way. The data were taken from twenty working paper abstracts of English Literature students in Binus University. On the working papers, the abstracts were written in both English and Indonesian. Since it was not clear which version was written previously, the English or the Indonesian ones, then both versions of abstracts were translated using Google Translate. Therefore, there were four sets of data to analyze: (1) Students’ Original Work in Indonesian, (2) GT’s Translation in English, (3) Students’ Original Work in English, and (4) GT’s Translation in Indonesian. From the data, samples of collocations were taken and categorized based on Hill’s (2000) classification of lexical collocations. The collocations in Indonesian and English were scrutinized to find out the translation errors, either done by students or GT. The results revealed that there were only five categories of collocation which contain translation errors. In total, Google Translate made fifteen lexical collocation errors while students only made seven errors. However, GT only made five wrong translation errors, while students made fourteen errors. This study implies that GT still need improvement in translating collocations, but it is also possible that translation errors occurred because of students’ misuse of collocation.
