Isi artikelAcademic writing is an inseparable part of university students’ academic life. In academic writing, there are very specific norms that students must conform to, and one of them involves citing the works of others. Citing in an academic writing will generally involve the use of reporting verbs. Although it is essential that we employ this linguistic device appropriately when citing others, experts have claimed how this might pose a problem for nonnative speakers of English as it is a complicated process. This holds true for Indonesian learners of English, to be precise, the students in the English department at Bunda Mulia University. Hence, this research attempts to find out how these students actually utilize these RVs in their undergraduate thesis as well as examine whether they have used them appropriately or not. The source of data is the reporting verbs (RVs) utilized by the students in their undergraduate thesis found in the students’ Chapter II (Literary Review) and Chapter III (Theoretical Framework). In order to analyze the reporting verbs, the writer makes use of the AntConc software version 3.5.6 by Anthony (2018). The result shows that verbs from the Discourse Acts group are the ones that are most frequently found in the students’ thesis. Additionally, the students mainly report on other people’s claims and findings neutrally and they never show their objections or reservations towards the information that they cite.
