The study is intended to describe the types and functions of discourse markers in President Trump's interview with The Wall Street Journal. The investigation is trying to show the frequent of each discourse marker made by President Trump. The types and the functions of discourse marker give description on what Trump’s statement. The study uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data of study was taken from the interview between Trump and Wall Street Journal dated on October 24th, 2018 about his point of view on several controversial issues, such as, Jamal Kashoggi’s death, his relationship MBS (Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Muhammed Bin Salman), American economic issues, his case with Michael Cohen, his former lawyer. and his view toward America economic development. The research is trying to analyze the types of discouse marker in Trump’s speech and to show the type of meaning and function s in each statement.The theory applied in this study uses Schiffin’s discourse marker (1987). Discourse markers are significant part in communication served as adjacent utterances in order to find the meaning of the speaker. The results of the research indicate that the use of discourse markers found in the President Trump’s interview with The Wall Street Journal are well, so, you know, like, and I mean. Each discourse markers show various meaning and functions. The functions of the markers show the following findings: (1) the use of the marker well served as leading utterance, as an agreement, as elaborating answer, as filler, and as face; (2) the use of the marker so served as resultative, as sequential, as main idea marker; (3) the use of you know used as shared knowledge, as filler, as appeal for understanding, and as giving example; (4) the use of I mean served as repairing system, as filler, as giving information, as leaving commentary, and (5) The use of like data as part of focusing information. This type is classified from their occurance after information. Those uses of discourse markers are served as systems to help audience to understand what speakers mean.
