Isi artikelCross-linguistically, there are two types of manual alphabet that are used to represent written letters of the alphabet: one-handed alphabets are produced with only one hand, while two-handed alphabets are usually produced using a mix of one- and two-handed signs. (Note that alphabets of the same type may be different from each other.) For example, British Sign Language (BSL) uses a two-handed alphabet, while American Sign Language (ASL) uses a one-handed alphabet. As well as spelling out words from a written language (fingerspelling), manual alphabets are used by signers for initialised signs (Machabée 1995) and ‘single manual letter signs’ (Sutton-Spence 1994). While researchers have already investigated loan signs that are based on one-handed alphabets (Brentari & Padden 2001) and two-handed alphabets (Cormier, Schembri & Tyrone 2008; Brown & Cormier 2017), their research mostly focuses on signers who use one alphabet. In this respect, BISINDO (Bahasa Isyarat Indonesia) is an outstanding example because some of its users use two manual alphabets. The two-handed alphabet used in Indonesia is thought to have been brought to Java from overseas by hearing teachers during the Dutch colonial period to try and teach spoken language (a neo-oralist method) (Palfreyman, 2019). This alphabet comprises 17 letters produced with two hands, and nine that a produced with one hand (Figure 1).
