This article discusses some of the problems presented by compounding to EFL learners whose L 7 does not make use of this word-saving device. It raises the issue of the complexity of the grammar and meaning of original compounds, which convey much implicit information for the reader to infer. The article reports on some activities carried out with upper-intermediate and advanced learners to help them understand and produce such units
