Isi artikel
The paper describes the development of Quantity Surveying as a third level discipline and the role of the professional bodies in determining its ethos and cultural orientation. It examines the conflict between professional standards and market forces as formative influences on the discipline, and the conflict between the requirements of multicultural third level education and the demands of the professional bodies concerning the education of surveyors. Hobbes's notion of 'social contract' is extended to the tacit agreements that third level students, particularly if they are immigrants, enter into with the universities and professional bodies concerning the cultural content of their education. The paper concludes that the contract on offer to surveying students commits them to a view of the world that is intrinsically monocultural and imperialist.
