Isi artikel
This paper presents a rationale for designing an authentic arts-based curriculum (AABC) that will facilitate the scholastic achievement of second language learners. It also offers proposals for the implementation of such a curriculum. Following an overview of the current sitl1ation, two perspectives are addressed. First, the design of AABC is positioned within a Vygotskiian framework of learning and conceptually organised by three themes: (1) The authenticity of the art experience; (2) The emphasis on social interaction and the developmental interplay among sign systems; (3) The effort to overcome the dualism in the separation of object and subject. Second, applicable findings from related literature are reviewed and synthesised within each of these themes. The author argues for the efficacy of focusing on meaning and higher-order thinking through the contextual support offered by the arts. The function of extra-linguistic symbol creation and usage are considered in relation to perception, language, and cognitive development. Studies on transfer among symbol systems and settings are examined. Identity and developmental issues are presented as they relate to the second language learner through the capacity to symbolise and to the structure of the self.
