Isi artikel
Does encouraging the home culture help to promote the mother tongue in minority language environments? Results of a three-year study show that children value their home experiences above any experiences at school and that factors promoting the development of skills in the mother tongue are socially defined in the family and influenced by the environment in which they live. Educators are encouraged to respect and value skills already developed in the home culture, and to first work with them rather than to try to replace them with more abstract, standardised language skills.
