The demand of internationalization and globalization to accomplish effective international co-operations has lead to studies exploring intercultural competences. This work focuses on one of the competences. Intercultural Sensitivity (ICS), degree of willingness to recognize, accept, or to optimize cultural differences. It aims at developing characteristics of ICS which are performed by members of Indonesian-German work groups. In reaching this aim, the study explores historical and cultural paths from both cultures in managing cultural differences. Two work groups videos are analyzed, an Indonesian monocultural group and an Indonesian-German group, along with 23 semi-structured interviews. The result is ICS characteristics of Indonesians in monocultural work groups and those from Indonesians and Germans as they work together. Data analysis shows that Indonesians develop their characteristics from the ones they have in monocultural groups whereas Germans develop their characteristics based on their important working values. |
