Isi artikelProgrammes in Civilisation/Cultural Studies at the University of Grenoble are described and discussed. It is argued that the professional core of Civilisation/Cultural Studies lies in the study of the relationship between context and discourse, the latter in the broad sense that includes cultural artefact generally. Here the necessity for the perspective of the outsider, combined with some linguistic competence, creates the possibility of a distinctive disciplinary basis for Civilisation/Cultural Studies. The work of Pierre Bourdieu has been found especially helpful in the Grenoble programme because of its focus on the relationship between idea~ and their socio-historical context. In spite of increasing demand, many problems remain for the discipline, ranging from restrictive interpretations of 'culture' to commercial competition from private language schools. As progress is made towards European integration, it may be that the future of Civilisation/Cultural Studies lies outside the language departments in the new structures developing to promote exchange of students and academic staff.
