Isi artikelThe paper discusses the value of both textual and ethnographic approaches to cultural studies. While recognising the importance of textual cultural studies, I suggest some limitations to it and argue for the centrality of 'living the ethnographic life' for any students spending a period of time abroad. Such. approach combines the analytical and the experiential, based as it is on a methodology in which data and concepts illuminate each other. Language is no longer separated from social and cultural knowledge but 'lived' and developed within a community in which the student participates and studies. An ethnographic approach requires an intense engagement in the routine lives of ordinary people and as such brings both rigour and personal development to a cultural and language learning experience.
