Professional biases. personal values, and family issues are discussed, using parents' effects an children and adolescent pregnancy as substantive examples. Many professio.'1als interested in families share a belief that parenting influences are largely responsible for most child outcomes. However, recent evidence suggests that biological mechanisms play a much larger role than traditionally has been allowed. Evidence about the biological biases of intelligence, sexual behavior, personality, psychopathology, and sexual orientation is presented, raising questions about the adequacy of a family social mold perspective. The evidence suggests that biological influences are more important than is reflected in the prevailing environmental paradigm. The presence of personal values in scientific research also is discussed, using the area of adolescent pregnancy as an example. Fundamental assumptions, the research questions posed and investigated, and the sensory data obtained and interpreted, all reflect the values of scholars. Some implications of this construction view are a broader view of reality, increased modesty in our truth claims, and a greater understanding of those whose values lead them to ask different questions and to interpret the evidence in alternative ways.
