Isi artikelSpanish-English bilinguals were tested in two lexical decision, word recognition experiments. In one experiment, practice on words from one language speeded later recognition of those same words, but did not affect recognition of translations of those words. In a second experiment, subjects told to respond positively to words of one language responded to real words from the nontarget language as if they were nonwords. These experiments show that bilinguals in a word recognition task are able to process the words of a language in a language-specific manner without any influence of their knowledge of the surface (e.g., spelling) or conceptual representations of words in the other language.
