Pedagang keliling (peddler) can be considered as the typical informal labor force that plays a significant role in the formation of urban grass roots and gives a certain color into urban life. In the case of the city of Jakarta, it is beyond argument that informal sector has turned multi-layered and multi-facets. By giving highlights on pedagang keliling in Jakarta, this paper tries to bring out the obscure side of grass roots, starting with introduction on previous studies by several prominent scholars, followed by findings from field observations. The field observations were conducted in March and May 2001, in two residential areas, one area represents urban kampong (densely populated, village like area), the other represents middle-class residential area, covering a total of 42 peddlers. |
