The paper discusses the importance of sccond language vocabulary teaching for ethnic 'minority school children, Observations of Turkish and Moroccan children in Dutch school classes show that lack of second language lexical skills limits school performance, Explorative testing points out that incidental vocabulary te'aching has only marginal results, From an experimental study it is concluded that more structured vocabulary teaching is also relatively unsuccessful.
