Isi artikel
The paper presents a theoretical and empirical framework for :m ongoing study of the spontaneous acquisition of Dutch by Turkish and Moroccan adults during the first three years of their stay in Holland. The study focuses on the acquisition of linguistic devices for reference to people, including nominal, pronominal, and discourse processes. A series of hypotheses and research questions is outlined. The study of. adult learners disentangles developmental and linguistic factors in a way that is not possible with younger learners. It is hoped that this study can establish some universal principles of language acquisition which are not obvious in data gathered from younger learners, and that it will provide guidelines for the design of an adult FL 'syllabus' for the increasing number of adults who will have to acquire a foreign language outside the school setting.
