Isi artikelIn Swedish schools special curricula have been designed with the objective of ensuring that immigrant Finnish children will maintain and develop their native language and at the same time achieve a sufficient competence in Swedish to enjoy educational and social opportunities comparable to those of their Swedish-speaking colleagues. The effectiveness of this policy is evaluated in four studies of Finnish-speaking immigrant children attending Swedish schools offering different degrees of Finnish-medium instruction. The students were in primary (Grades 3 and 6) and post-primary (Grade 8) schools. Causal models relating social background, medium of instruction, and school achievement were fitted and replicated. A strong relationship between competence in Swedish and overall scholastic achievement was a constant finding. Interference between Finnish and Swedish, which was observed in Grade 6, had disappeared by Grade 8. Key issues are discussed and a generalised model of immigrant education is proposed.
