Isi artikelIn this study, data from the 1988 General Social Survey for 978 adults were used to analyze regional differences in attitudes toward corporal punishment. Results revealed that while a majority of respondents in each of the four regions favored spanking children, support varied among the regions. Slightly more than two thirds of northeasterners supported spanking, but 86% of southerners favored the practice. However, after controlling for eight sociodemographic variables, the Northeast Has found to have significantly less favorable attitudes toward spanking than either the West, the Midwest, or the South. Implications of the finding, for research and policy are discussed.
