Isi artikelThis study investigates adolescent suicidal ideation and focuses specifically on various measures of family conflict and adolescent self-derogation as predictors. Conflict and self-derogatory feelings have manifested significant correlations with suicidal ideation in numerous studies. An important contribution of this study is the simultaneous analysis of the family and personal predictors as a method to better specify these effects. Structural equation analysis of survey data from 473 adolescents from a southern suburb is employed. Results support the hypothesis that the effects of family conflict are mediated by self-derogation, for both male and female adolescents. Independent effects of diverse forms of family conflict-marital, parent-adolescent, and general family conflict-are also noted.
