This article tries to show by means of a variety of examples that the data available in the Survey of English Usage are not merely useful for frequency counts of various sorts, but that they can reveal a number of interesting facts about usage not normally obtained from introspective analyses of self-made examples, or from a study of existing grammars or handbooks. Some of these findings are directly relevant to anyone involved in TEFL or in syllabus writing.
