Isi artikelThe foreign-language teaching process, like most human activities, depends on making choices of various kinds: choices of materials, activities, approaches, and so on. Since teaching, like language itself, is necessarily linear, decisions constantly need to be made, sometimes to eliminate alternatives, and sometimes to arrange different activities in a productive order. In this article, we take an analytical look at this decision-making process, and examine the needs behind it, with a view to proposing a hierarchy of decisions. We then suggest that this hierarchy is not sufficiently respected, either in the career structure of the profession itself, or during teacher training. Finally, we argue for a model of teacher training which is capable of extention, and which takes the 'decision pyramid' into account.
