This article describes the approach taken to the testing of reading comprehension in a project carried out at Bombay University. After drawing a distinction between 'communicational' and 'communicative' approaches to teaching, the author analyses reading skills and examines traditional techniques for the testing of them. Then sample reading comprehension tests incorporating an alternative approach to the problem are discussed and the techniques they contain are compared with those traditionally used.
