Isi artikelThe first-year syllabus at the British Institute in Madrid suffered a drastic change as a result of the adoption of a functional approach and freer teaching techniques, such as Community Language Learning and drama. Two core syllabuses, a communicative one and a grammatical one, and a modular syllabus, with hints for introducing out-of-sequence items on the core syllabuses, were implemented in October 1979. The article explains how the syllabuses have been drawn up, what they offer to teachers, and how they have affected first year teaching as a whole.
