Isi artikel
This paper focuses on the controversy among the language specialists in Nepal over the sources of lexical borrowing in Nepali. The question is: should the lexical items be borrowed from Sanskrit or English? Despite this controversy, lexical items in different domains of language use continue to be borrowed from both Sanskrit and English in addition to Hindi/Urdu, Persian, and Arabic. After briefly reviewing the history of Nepali, and the current language situation in Nepal, this paper examines the question of borrowing from different sources within different domains of language use.
