Isi artikel
An introductory section deals with Broca, the forgotten founder of physical anthropology. It was within the context of this discipline that his major contributions to the study of the brain and its functions were made. These contributions are considered under three rubrics. (1) Measurement. Broca's views on race, his contribu-tions to craniometry in terms of instrumentation and statistical procedures, his study of the role of brain size and its relation to race, sex, social status and age. (2) Localization of function. The influence of Gall, anatomical nomenclature, the nature of localization (regional versus gyral), cytoarchitecture, cerebral asymmetries. (3) Comparative neuroanatomy. The principle of proper mass, hierarchical organization of the nervous system, conservative nature of brain evolution.
