The classic dissociation of syntactic and lexical components of language production by aphasics is challenged in this paper. The utterances of Broca's aphasics and anomies describing illustrated stories are analyzed for open and closed vocabulary. Selective disruption of function words is only observed in a subgroup of Broca's aphasics. In these subjects, the deficit is only noted for some grammatical morphemes (verb inflections, but not determiners); similarly, among content words, only nouns are produced in higher proportions. The aphasic groups do not differ in mentioning the main thematic contents represented by target nouns and action verbs. However, the narrative strategies used by Broca's aphasics and by anomies show distinct impairments. It is suggested that production of Broca's aphasics reflects a deficit on Garrett's Junctional' level, where lexical items are retrievedfrom their meaning and syntactic roles. Anomies show a deficit on the 'positional' level, where a phonological interpretation is given to the sentence frame.
