The article and the aorist/imperfect distinction in Bulgarian: an analysis based on cross-language aspect parallelisms

Pragmatically oriented concepts like definiteness and indefiniteness, genericness and specificity, fail to account for certain regularities of the use of the article and its distribution in the different languages. The major function of the English articles, along with the expression of definiteness and indefiniteness, is to mark temporal boundedness of objects and thence perfectivity of the action. Languages differ according to whether they use nominal (English) or verbal (Russian) markers of temporal boundedness. Some languages (Bulgarian) are borderline cases. However, is the definite article in Bulgarian a marker of temporal boundedness? What is the status of the aorist/imperfect distinction? A proposal is made that the imperfect should be regarded as an additional marker of imperfectivity eliminating object boundedness generated by the article. The complex tense-aspect system of the perfective and the imperfective aorist, the perfective and the imperfective imperfect, is represented in terms of certain relationships of its members whereby the verb maps its temporal range onto the objects in the sentence. Conclusions: the Bulgarian article is a covert marker of temporal boundedness; aspect and tense-aspect verb correlates are not categories per se but constitute a device for governing the temporal range of objects in the sentence.
