Isi artikel
Most investigations into the implementation of sound change through lexical diffusion have concentrated on the role of word frequency . Word class also plays an important role, however. especially noticeable being the often divergent development offunction words. Since the two most salientfeatures of function words are their high word frequency and their low sentence stress, these two elements are examined in a review of the behavior of function words in a number of sound changes. It is discovered that low sentence stress is the main determining factor in whether function words change first or last in the diffusion of a sound change: with only one minor exception, weakening processes affect function words first, whereas strengthening processes affect them last.
